pasta:
creating a photo for a doublepage in a high class magazine
as an intro for an article about pasta

horizontal format (doublepage) and with great appetizing appeal

4 by 5 inch camera, studio flash, controlling by fuji fp-100c instant material

1.1.
pasta on a glass plate with a reflecting hazylight
(angle of incidence and angle of reflection are the same!)

the pasta looks dead, the package is unnecessary, but we liked the reflections
so we decided to work on those

1.2.
getting closer and focussing on a section where we had more
interresting reflections

adding a spotlight from a very low angle to give a better colour

1.2

1.3.
placing a blue frosted filtersheet under the glassplate and a backlight
produced this "blue shadow"

i don´t think it´s a great shot, but we tried to stay with the original idea and develope it as far as we could within 2 1/2 hours

2.1.
pasta on a light table with a backlight shining through
and a hazylight from above

(i have the feeling that if the students don´t have an idea the light table always seems to help...)

2.1.
getting closer was a good idea but maybe we overdid it a little and
we forgot to open the aperture (losing light in the close up range!)

it still looks pretty boring, doesnt have any appetite apeal and time was running
so we decided to try a double exposure:

2.2
1.shot we had a spot lightening the pasta and not the lighttable
aperture was at about f 22 and the focus was set to the pasta, no backlight

2. shot was done with the backlight only (no light for the pasta)
the aperture was fully open and the rear stanchion was set out of focus
to create a blurred silhouette

here the backlight was much to strong (about 2 f-stops)

2.4.
the light on the pasta looks good to me now and the relation between
sharp parts and diffuse sections are well-balanced

this shot looks pretty interresting at first, but always keep in mind that this is an effect and i think effects become boring very easily.
i really don´t like the glasses because these are definetly drinking glasses, so there is no connection with the pasta!
this is an example of good technic but of bad styling and bad preparation, so what... ?
